JIFA: Environmental ‘Context’ Reports

In July 2019, a group of judges met with JIFA in Johannesburg to workshop the content and structure of the judicial environmental law training programme to be held in August 2019.

A clear issue that emerged from this workshop was a desire to have a greater understanding of the ‘context’ of environmental law; internationally, regionally and nationally. What are the key laws, policies, issues and challenges to be grasped?

In response to this interest, JIFA commissioned postgraduate students of the law faculty of the University of Cape Town to write a series of briefing reports to be distributed to the judges at the training. These reports are not polished opinions, but a curated set of extracts designed to give a sense of the context in which environmental law is made and enforced. The reports included in this publication have been produced.
